There’s a saying in real estate that kitchens sell homes. A well planned and executed kitchen can add thousands to the value of your property and for some buyers, it’s the number one selling point.
Kitchen trends have evolved over time from the post-war “kitchens of the future” of the 50’s and colourful orange and lime green in the 60’s, to the timber clad kitchens of the 80’s and 90’s. Today it’s all about the open plan kitchen, living and dining space in neutral tones and natural finishes. But like all good trends, kitchen trends are cyclical too and we’re seeing elements of the 1920’s returning, particularly with tiles and light fittings.

The key is to create a kitchen that reflects your lifestyle – entertainer, family, small space or low fuss. Light and bright, with island bench space and hidden appliances is a safe place to start.
If you’re considering a kitchen update, work out your budget early on and decide if you can afford a full renovation or just need to make some quick wins with cupboard doors and benchtops.

Try these on for style
White, French-inspired cabinetry is big right now, with gold or art deco inspired fixtures.
Matt black cabinetry makes a safe statement, especially when paired with with crisp white splashback and marble bench tops.
Consider a black or white finish if you have timber floors.
A light feature over the island bench will add personality and drama to any kitchen. The repetition of smaller light fittings will have the same effect.
If you’ve chosen a fresh white palette consider varying the tones, like adding a pale grey, to create depth.
Consider custom joinery for extra storage and function – an island bench can multipurpose with dining seating built in or create a table nook with storage underseat.
