Tiles have the power to completely update tired space, from something as simple as a handful of feature tiles on a kitchen splashback, through to a fully tiled wet area or expansive living room. As practical as they are attractive, spending on good quality tiles and experienced tradespeople can add thousands in value to your home.
Begin by researching current magazines to work out what you like and then create a mood board or Pinterest board of images, textures and tile samples to firm up your concept. Visit tile showrooms to see samples or, if your budget allows, work with an interior designer. Make sure you consider the use of the tiles when making your selection – do you need non-slip, hardwearing, high traffic, decorative or wow-factor?
Chris Ilias from Teranova in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs has seen a big surge in Carrara and Calcutta marble tiles, “People have the impression marble is very expensive but if done on a bathroom floor or wall, it’s affordable. Even the shabbiest place feels luxurious with a refurbishment of a bathroom.” Reality television is also playing its part in driving trends, Chris says, “We’ve seen a switch with the major developers and architects spending more on tiles and fittings as people have a wider knowledge of design.”
Marco De Clerico, Director of Skheme, a Rozelle tile importer who sources unique and exclusive tiles from around the world, believes the trend for natural is going to strengthen, “We’ll see natural stone looks, especially slate, large porcelain slabs, geometric patterns and pastel colours,” he shared. The right fit is critical, “Choose the correct product that best suits your property – family home, holiday house, rental property etc. And choose an experienced contractor,” Marco advises.
